An original late Georgian copperplate engraving titled Mares & Foals, designed and engraved by the distinguished British sporting artist Samuel Howitt. The print depicts a tranquil pastoral scene with mares and their young gathered beneath a magnificent tree in an English countryside setting.
The plate is signed in the image "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that Howitt both conceived and executed the engraving himself. At lower right it bears the publication line "Published Feb.y 1st, 1799," confirming its eighteenth-century origin.
Samuel Howitt was among the foremost British animal and sporting artists of his generation. Renowned for his naturalistic depictions of horses, hunting scenes, and wildlife, his works were widely admired by the English gentry and remain highly collectible today.
