An elegant original copperplate engraving by celebrated British sporting artist Samuel Howitt, depicting a finely saddled hunter standing before a rustic stable. The composition exemplifies the refined equestrian imagery that made Howitt one of the foremost animal painters and engravers of the Georgian period.
The plate bears the inscription "Howitt inv. et f.", indicating that the artist both designed and engraved the work himself. At lower right the publication line reads "Published Oct. 23, 1799," confirming its original eighteenth-century publication.
Samuel Howitt (1756–1822) was renowned for his depictions of horses, hunting scenes, dogs, and rural sporting life. His engravings were highly regarded among the English gentry and remain sought after today by collectors of antique sporting art and equestrian imagery.
