Willem Blaeu – Dutch Cartographer and Publisher, 19th-Century Lithograph
Item Description: This refined 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts Willem Blaeu, one of the most important Dutch cartographers and publishers of the seventeenth century. Born in 1571, Blaeu was a student of the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and became renowned for his beautifully engraved maps, atlases, and globes. He founded the Blaeu publishing house in Amsterdam, which later produced the monumental Atlas Maior, one of the most magnificent map collections ever printed.
The lithograph shows Blaeu seated in a scholarly pose with a book in hand, surrounded by oversized volumes and rolled charts—symbolic of his contributions to geography and knowledge. His attire and expression convey the dignity and intellect of a man deeply involved in science, exploration, and publishing during the Dutch Golden Age.
Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht, this lithograph blends accurate historical portraiture with decorative appeal. The hand-applied color and subtle shading bring the subject to life while preserving a sense of period character.
