Dutch Statesmen – Raadpensionarissen Isaak van Hoornbeek, Pieter Steyn, Jacob Gilles, c.1770s
This finely engraved set of three 18th-century copperplate portraits depicts prominent Dutch statesmen who held the influential position of Raadpensionaris (Grand Pensionary) of Holland, the leading political office in the province and, in practice, one of the most powerful roles in the Dutch Republic. The portraits are presented within oval cartouches with the subjects' names and titles inscribed beneath. From left to right:
1. Isaak van Hoornbeek – Raadpensionaris of Holland. A skilled statesman and diplomat, Van Hoornbeek (1655–1709) played a crucial role in the political affairs of the province during a turbulent period in Dutch history.
2. Pieter Steyn – Raadpensionaris of Holland. Pieter Steyn (1706–1772) was a central political figure in the mid-18th century, overseeing matters of trade, diplomacy, and governance during a time of relative peace and economic stability.
3. Jacob Gilles – Raadpensionaris of Holland. Gilles (1695–1749) was noted for his administrative skill and influence in state policy, particularly in legislative and diplomatic matters.
These portraits are meticulously detailed, showing the men in formal attire with 18th-century wigs and cravats, emphasizing their status and dignity. Such engravings were often part of larger biographical or historical publications celebrating Dutch leaders and military heroes.
