Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Nativity, Luke the Evangelist & Annunciation
This set of three antique engravings, dating to 1735, presents key moments from the Gospel of Luke with beautifully detailed copper engraving work. Each print captures a distinct and significant biblical event, rendered with spiritual intensity and fine artistic skill, making the group ideal for collectors of sacred art, religious historians, or those seeking an elegant triptych display.
The first engraving, from Luke Chapter II, is titled "Christ Nativity." It depicts the traditional nativity scene with Mary and Joseph adoring the newborn Christ, surrounded by shepherds, attendants, and animals in a rustic stable. Mary, with a luminous halo, cradles the infant while a servant kneels with a water vessel. An ox and donkey rest in the foreground. Above, the structure's timber frame and wheel suggest the humble setting. This classic composition conveys peace, wonder, and divine presence.
The second engraving shows "St. Luke the Evangelist," from Chapter I. Luke stands barefoot on a platform, robed and gesturing upward beneath a blazing celestial sunburst. A tree, book, and ox—a symbol of Luke—appear beside him. The engraving exudes the authority and inspiration of the Gospel author. The confident stance and upward gaze suggest divine calling and the transmission of sacred truth.
The third image is titled "The Annunciation to the Virgin Mary." The scene shows the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary in a dramatic interior. Gabriel, winged and illuminated, raises his arm as he delivers the message of divine conception. Mary kneels in awe and humility beside a writing desk, draped in shadows and light. Clouds, a starburst, and rich curtains frame the heavenly moment. The engraving is signed by L. Carrolo and captures the mystery and grace of this pivotal event.
Condition summary: All three prints are in good condition. Light even toning, occasional faint foxing, and minor margin staining, particularly in the upper margin of the central sheet. No visible tears or repairs. Impressions are strong, with crisp detail throughout. Paper remains firm and suitable for framing.
Framing tips: A unified set like this benefits from matching frames in dark wood or gold leaf. Use warm ivory or parchment-toned mounts to complement the aged paper. UV-protective glass is strongly recommended to preserve the fine engraving work and prevent fading.
