Saint Joseph Visited by an Angel, Antique German Chromolithograph c.1900
This deeply symbolic late 19th–early 20th century German chromolithograph presents the powerful biblical moment in which Saint Joseph is visited by an angel in a dream. Seated on his bed inside a humble interior, Joseph receives divine instruction from the luminous angel who gestures outward with authority and calm assurance. In the background, the sleeping Virgin Mary and the Christ Child rest peacefully, underscoring the sacred mission being revealed.
The composition is masterfully staged. Joseph appears awakening from sleep, visibly startled yet attentive, his halo faintly glowing as divine light enters the room. The angel stands radiant in flowing white robes, wings unfurled, embodying divine guidance and heavenly protection. The subdued nocturnal tones of the interior contrast beautifully with the glowing brilliance of the angel, creating a dramatic spiritual tension that elevates the narrative.
The scene illustrates the scriptural moment in which Joseph is instructed to protect Mary and the Christ Child—one of the most intimate and essential episodes in the Nativity cycle.
