Holy Family with God the Father – Antique German Chromolithograph, 1900
This richly symbolic and beautifully composed antique German chromolithograph presents the Holy Family in a rare and theologically powerful arrangement. At the center stands the youthful Christ Child, barefoot and radiant, extending His arms in a gesture of divine welcome and blessing. To His left stands the Virgin Mary, humble and contemplative, clothed in deep red and blue, while Saint Joseph stands to His right holding a branch of white lilies, symbol of purity and guardianship.
Behind the figures rises a glowing cross, surrounded by radiant golden light, reinforcing Christ’s future sacrifice and divine mission. Above, God the Father appears in the clouds with open arms, watched by adoring angels, while the Holy Spirit descends as a dove in brilliant light — forming a rare and complete visual representation of the Holy Trinity together with the Holy Family.
The composition is exceptionally balanced and devotional, combining earth and heaven in a single sacred vision. The saturated reds, blues, golds, and greens are characteristic of premium German chromolithography from the turn of the 20th century. Fine facial modeling, delicate halo work, and luminous spiritual symbolism confirm this as a high-quality Catholic devotional print, originally intended for churches, schools, and religious households.
Such complete Trinity-and-Holy-Family compositions are increasingly difficult to find in original condition and are highly sought after by collectors of Catholic devotional art.
CONDITION REPORT
Very good antique condition. Light, even age toning consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small handling marks at the margins. No major tears, no losses, and no restoration. Colors remain vivid and well-preserved with strong contrast and excellent facial detail.
FRAMING TIPS
This work is ideally suited for a classic gilt or dark walnut frame. Use a warm ivory or soft gold mat with UV-protective glass to enhance the heavenly tones and preserve the chromolithographic colors.
