Antique print that translates from Dutch to "View of Resolution Bay, on the Island of St. Christina, one of the Marquesas Islands." This is a historical print from the Dutch edition of Captain James Cook's "Voyages Around the World," which has been translated by J.D. Pasteur.
The Marquesas Islands were one of the many places visited by Captain Cook during his expeditions, and the Bay named "Resolution" was likely named after Cook's ship, HMS Resolution. St. Christina is an old name for Tahuata, which is part of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.
Prints like this served as visual records of Cook's encounters and findings, and were instrumental in spreading knowledge of the Pacific Islands to Europe.
