Original Antique Devotional Print of Christ of Guamantanga, Peru, 1779
An original antique devotional copperplate engraving with fine original hand colouring, published in Peru in 1779.
This remarkable religious print is titled "Verdadera Imagen del Ssmo. Christo de Guamantanga" ("True Image of the Most Holy Christ of Guamantanga") and depicts the miraculous crucifix venerated in the village of Guamantanga, in the Province of Canta, Peru.
At the centre stands Christ crucified beneath an architectural arch, accompanied by kneeling worshippers representing different social classes, emphasizing the universal nature of Christian devotion. Four oval medallions surrounding the central image illustrate episodes associated with the veneration and miracles of the Christ of Guamantanga, while cherubs, ornamental ribbons and decorative architectural elements complete the richly composed design.
The inscription records that the image was venerated in the Province of Canta in the Viceroyalty of Peru and is dated 1779. Such eighteenth-century Peruvian devotional engravings are considerably scarcer than their European counterparts and provide an exceptional insight into the religious culture of colonial Spanish America.
The delicate original hand colouring gives the engraving an appearance reminiscent of a small painting and greatly enhances its decorative appeal.
