Antique Biblical Engravings – Healing at Bethesda & Feeding of the Five Thousand, ca. 1700
This fine engraving sheet, published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier around 1700, illustrates two of the most renowned miracles of Christ, drawn from the Gospel of John. Both scenes combine striking Baroque drama with devotional intent, capturing the compassion and divine authority of Jesus.
The upper image depicts the Healing at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1–9). A man who had been infirm for thirty-eight years lies beside the pool, waiting in vain for healing. Christ stands above him, hand extended in command, while disciples watch the moment of miraculous intervention. The grand architectural background, with colonnades and arches, frames the act in an atmosphere of dignity and solemnity.
The lower engraving shows the Feeding of the Five Thousand (John 6:1–14). Christ, seated in calm authority, blesses the loaves and fishes brought by the disciples, while the multitude gathers around in anticipation. In the foreground, baskets overflow as the miracle unfolds, embodying themes of divine providence and abundance. The artist emphasizes not only the scale of the event but also the intimacy of Christ’s gesture, linking heavenly grace to everyday sustenance.
These engravings were originally part of Mortier’s great illustrated Bible, one of the most ambitious Dutch publishing ventures of the early 18th century, which sought to bring scripture vividly to life through monumental copperplate illustrations. Collectors value these sheets both for their biblical subject matter and their representation of Northern Baroque religious art.

Framing tips: A vertical presentation is ideal, with both scenes preserved on one sheet. Use a light ivory mat to highlight the engraving’s fine lines and a walnut or ebonized frame for balance. A subtle gilt fillet may emphasize the sacred nature of the subject.
