Genesis Narrative Engravings Set – Mortier Amsterdam, Flood to Babel Scenes 1700
This rare and visually compelling set of six early-18th-century biblical engravings was published by the distinguished Amsterdam engraver and publisher Pieter Mortier around 1700. Each sheet presents two finely composed narrative scenes, resulting in a cohesive series of twelve episodes drawn from the Book of Genesis, including the Flood, Noah’s sacrifice, the Covenant, the Tower of Babel, and the life of Abraham.
Mortier’s workshop was among the most respected in Amsterdam at the turn of the 18th century, known for producing high-quality engravings that combined clarity of line with balanced, classical compositions. These works reflect the Dutch Baroque tradition, translating dramatic biblical narratives into refined visual storytelling suited for both devotional and decorative purposes. Condition:
Overall in good condition for works of this age. Some age-related toning, light foxing, and minor staining to the margins, as expected. Edges show occasional wear and small imperfections. Plate marks visible. Images remain strong and well-defined.

This set works exceptionally well as a 2x3 grid. Use dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory or off-white matting to create a museum-style presentation. A consistent frame across all six pieces enhances the narrative unity, while generous matting gives each scene visual presence and balance.
