Antique Biblical Engravings, Mortier Amsterdam – Apocalypse Cycle, c.1700
This rare and decorative set consists of three early-18th-century biblical copper engravings, each sheet engraved with two narrative scenes, published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam circa 1700. Together, the three sheets present a coherent visual cycle of six scenes from the Book of Revelation, framed within finely engraved ornamental borders and title cartouches typical of Dutch Baroque religious printmaking.
The engravings depict dramatic apocalyptic visions with striking clarity and imagination. One scene shows the radiant Heavenly Jerusalem descending, its geometric perfection illuminated by divine light. Another presents the Lamb of God enthroned, surrounded by concentric circles of worshippers under rays of heavenly glory. Further scenes include angels gathering and sounding divine messages, a celestial assembly amid clouds, and the unleashing of divine judgment upon the earth, with figures fleeing and seeking refuge in caves. The final scene shows a powerful angel revealing divine truth to Saint John, bathed in intense light, symbolizing revelation and prophecy.
Mortier’s workshop was renowned for its precise line work, balanced compositions, and ability to translate complex theological visions into compelling visual narratives. These engravings combine panoramic landscapes, celestial drama, and symbolic imagery, making them both intellectually engaging and highly decorative. They were intended for devotional use and for cultured interiors, reflecting the fascination with apocalyptic imagery in the Dutch Republic around 1700.
Condition: Good, with general age-related toning, light foxing, and minor edge wear. Original margins preserved. Please study images carefully.
Framing tips: These prints work beautifully as a vertical series or symmetrical grouping. Dark wood or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats will emphasize contrast and detail, while a more minimal black frame with deep mounts creates a refined contemporary presentation.
