This fine 19th-century chromolithograph presents a historical and atmospheric view of Jericho, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world and a site of great biblical significance. The print originates from the 1862 publication *De Middelaar God en der Menschen - Tafereelen uit Jezus' Leven en Werk op Aarde* by J.J.L. Ten Kate, published by Gebroeders Kraay in Amsterdam. The composition is based on an original plate by the distinguished British artist David Roberts (1796–1864), whose captivating illustrations of the Holy Land remain some of the most desirable representations of biblical landscapes.
The scene captures the vast and arid terrain surrounding Jericho, with rolling hills stretching toward the horizon. In the foreground, a circular stone enclosure with scattered ruins hints at the city's ancient past, while groups of travelers with camels and livestock rest along the roadside, adding a sense of daily life and movement.
