Antique Walrus Lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, 1816
This rare and atmospheric early 19th-century hand-colored lithograph by the celebrated Swiss natural history artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann depicts a walrus (“Trichecus Rosmarus”) accompanied by its young. Produced in 1816, the print reflects the fascination with exotic Arctic wildlife and scientific discovery that characterized the Enlightenment and Romantic periods.
The composition is unusually powerful in its simplicity. The monumental adult walrus dominates the sheet with impressive mass and sculptural form, while the smaller juvenile beside it introduces a quiet sense of intimacy and natural observation. The soft modelling of the folds, tusks, whiskers, and skin texture gives the animals remarkable presence despite the restrained palette and minimal setting.
Karl Joseph Brodtmann was among the pioneering masters of natural history lithography in Europe and remains highly regarded for combining scientific precision with decorative elegance.
