About this sheet

Old colored lithograph by Fairland after W. Nicholson, from "The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Isles" by David Low, published in London, 1842.

The lithograph depicts sheep from the Wicklow Mountains, including a ewe and ram, with a lamb lying down.

The image showcases detailed illustrations of the breed, with particular attention to their wool and physical characteristics, set against a mountainous backdrop. The lithograph was drawn on stone and printed by Fairland, with publication details indicating its release in April 1842 by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longmans, Paternoster Row, London.

The sheep depicted in the lithograph are from the Wicklow Mountains, which are located in County Wicklow, Ireland. Today, you can find similar breeds of sheep in the following locations:

1. Wicklow Mountains, Ireland: The Wicklow Mountains remain home to various breeds of sheep, including the Wicklow Cheviot, which is a hardy breed well-suited to the mountainous terrain and weather conditions of the area.

2. Other parts of Ireland: Similar sheep breeds are also found throughout other mountainous and hilly regions of Ireland, where they are raised for their wool and meat.

3. United Kingdom: Similar breeds can be found in the UK, particularly in Scotland and Northern England, where mountainous and rugged terrains are common.

4. Specialized Breeders and Farms: There are specialized farms and breeders dedicated to maintaining and preserving traditional and rare sheep breeds, including those depicted in historical lithographs.

These locations are known for their sustainable sheep farming practices, often focusing on traditional and heritage breeds.
