Young Woman of Porto, Portugal – Hand-Coloured Lithograph by Markaert, c.1845

This refined hand-coloured lithograph depicts a young woman from Porto, shown in traditional regional dress typical of northern Portugal in the mid-19th century. Wrapped in a dark shawl that frames her figure and posture, the subject conveys modesty and restraint, qualities often emphasised in contemporary representations of Iberian daily life. A vivid red textile accent provides a striking contrast against the otherwise subdued palette.
The plate was drawn and lithographed by Markaert for Auguste Wahlen’s ambitious ethnographic publication Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples du Monde, issued in Brussels around 1845. The work aimed to document regional dress and social identity across Europe and beyond, combining visual clarity with decorative appeal.
The neutral background isolates the figure, allowing costume, colour, and form to dominate the composition. Hand colouring was applied individually, giving each example slight tonal variation and a distinctly artisanal character.
