About this sheet
An original antique lithograph portrait of an unnamed gentleman wearing orders of chivalry, printed at the lithographic institute of P. Suhr in Hamburg around 1835.
The sitter is shown at half length, turned three quarters to the left, with thick curling hair, long side whiskers and a faint, composed smile. He wears a high white collar and stock, a patterned waistcoat and a dark coat with full shoulders. Two cross shaped orders hang from ribbons at his neck and waistcoat, a star shaped cross is pinned to the breast of his coat, and a small ribbon bar sits on the lapel, marks of public service and honor. The drawing on the stone is large and confident, with deep velvety blacks in the coat and a fine stipple in the face.
The stone is signed by the artist at lower left, the signature ending "fec.", and the printer's line "Litho. Inst. v. P. Suhr in Hamburg" runs below the image at right. Peter Suhr (1788 to 1857) and his brother were the leading lithographic printers of Hamburg in the first half of the nineteenth century, known for their views of the city and for portraits of its citizens. The costume, with its puffed sleeve heads and high collar, belongs to the 1830s.
Although the sitter is not named, this is a large and finely drawn portrait of real presence, and it rewards collectors of early German lithography, of Hamburg printing, or of the portrait for its own sake.
