Die Apfelschälerin — Peasant Interior after David Teniers, Morgenstern, 1802
This finely detailed etching titled Die Äpfelschälerin (“The Apple Peeler”) was created in 1802 by the German artist Johann Friedrich Morgenstern (1777–1844) in Frankfurt am Main. The print is engraved after a composition by the Flemish master David Teniers the Younger, one of the most celebrated painters of rustic genre scenes in the 17th century.
The scene depicts a quiet domestic moment within a humble peasant interior. An elderly woman sits on a stone platform in front of a rustic oven or hearth, carefully peeling apples with a small knife. A basket beside her contains additional apples, suggesting the preparation of food for the household. The woman’s calm concentration and the simplicity of the task emphasize the intimate character of daily rural life.
In the darker background to the left, a small group of chickens gathers near a wooden structure, adding life and natural detail to the composition. Above them, an owl perches on a small shelf attached to a wooden post—an intriguing element often found in Northern European genre scenes, where such animals sometimes carried symbolic or atmospheric significance. The carefully balanced contrast between the illuminated foreground and the shadowed interior behind it demonstrates Morgenstern’s skillful handling of light and tonal depth.
Johann Friedrich Morgenstern belonged to a prominent family of artists active in Frankfurt. He was particularly known for producing refined engravings after Old Master paintings and for his work as a restorer and copyist of historic artworks. Through prints like this one, Morgenstern helped make famous Flemish and Dutch genre paintings accessible to collectors and art enthusiasts who might otherwise never see the original works.
The original composition by David Teniers the Younger reflects the tradition of 17th-century Flemish genre painting, which often portrayed scenes of peasant life with a combination of realism, humor, and careful observation. Condition:
Good antique condition with light age toning and minor spotting consistent with age. The plate mark remains visible and the impression is clear and well printed. Minor handling wear is confined mainly to the margins.

This intimate interior scene frames beautifully in a dark walnut or black frame with a warm ivory mat. A generous mat border highlights the delicate etched lines and enhances the atmospheric character of the composition.
