A striking and highly decorative set of six original 19th-century engravings depicting some of the most iconic monuments and grand urban vistas of Paris, published by Chamouin in Paris circa 1855 as part of the renowned series Vues de Paris, prises au daguerréotype. These prints are based on early photographic sources, translating the precision of the daguerreotype into finely executed steel engravings of remarkable clarity and depth.
This set includes views of the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, Église de la Madeleine, École Militaire and Champ de Mars, Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, a sweeping Vue Générale from the Quai d’Orsay, and the Palais du Corps Législatif with the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères. Together, they present a powerful visual narrative of mid-19th-century Paris at the height of its transformation into a modern imperial capital.
Each composition is rich in architectural detail, capturing the grandeur and symmetry of Parisian monuments, while the foregrounds are animated with elegant figures in period dress, horse-drawn carriages, and scenes of daily life. Condition:
Overall in good condition for age, with light toning and occasional spotting to the margins. Minor handling wear and age-related marks. Plate impressions visible. Strong, crisp impressions with excellent detail.
Framing tips:
Best presented as a gallery wall in a 2x3 layout. Dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats enhance the classical character, while slimmer black or bronze frames with clean white mats offer a more contemporary presentation.
