18th Century Male Nude Back View Academic Figure Study after de Lairesse c1745
This refined academic figure engraving depicts a muscular male nude shown from the back, standing in a contrapposto pose and leaning on a staff. The composition emphasizes the structure of the back, shoulders, hips, and legs, offering a precise study of balance, musculature, and proportion. Such rear-view studies were essential in academic training, allowing artists to fully understand the human form in three dimensions.
The print is engraved after designs by Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711), one of the most influential theorists and artists of the Baroque period. Lairesse’s *Principes de dessin* became a cornerstone of European art education and was widely used in academies throughout the 18th century. This example comes from the German edition published circa 1745, which is notably scarcer than the earlier French editions and later 19th-century reprints.
Rendered with fine, controlled line work, the engraving demonstrates the classical ideals of harmony and anatomical clarity that defined Enlightenment-era academic art. Condition
Good antique condition. Original laid paper with even age-related toning. Minor scattered spotting and light surface dirt, mainly visible in the margins. Small edge wear and softening consistent with age. The engraved image remains strong and well-defined. Plate impression visible. No major tears or losses.
Framing tips
A dark walnut, black, or ebonized frame complements the classical subject matter. A wide off-white or warm grey mat enhances depth and emphasizes the sculptural quality of the figure. Museum glass is recommended for preservation.
