Immaculate Conception, c.1900 German Devotional Chromolithograph
This beautiful early 20th-century German chromolithograph depicts the Immaculate Conception, one of the most beloved subjects in Catholic devotional art. Printed around 1900–1915 by a major German religious press, the work displays the glowing colour transitions, soft clouds, and luminous haloes characteristic of fine German chromolithography from this period. These devotional prints were distributed across Europe and the Americas and were widely displayed in Catholic homes, chapels, and convents.
The image presents the Virgin Mary rising in glory, clothed in white and blue and surrounded by cherubim. Her upward gaze and crossed hands reference the purity and grace central to the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. At her feet, a cluster of playful angels carry lilies, roses, and palm fronds, traditional symbols of purity, love, and victory over sin. The colour palette is exquisitely balanced: delicate skin tones, deep blue drapery, warm peach hues, and a radiant golden halo—achieved through layered stone plates that were the hallmark of true chromolithographic printing. This depth and softness cannot be replicated by later offset or digital methods, confirming the authenticity of this piece as an early 20th-century chromolithograph.
Along the lower margin, multilingual titles identify the print for international distribution: “Die Unbefleckte Empfängnis. L’Immaculée Conception. La Purísima Concepción. Immaculate Conception. Immacolata Concezione.” This multilingual format is typical of German devotional publishers and reflects the global reach of their work. The imprimatur (“Imprimi permittitur… Ordinariatus episcopalis…”) grants official Church approval for printing, further confirming its status as a genuine devotional artwork. The imprint “Printed in Germany” situates the piece within one of the major German chromolithographic centres—likely Munich or Cologne—renowned for their high-quality religious imagery.
This print is unquestionably an original chromolithograph, not a modern reproduction. The velvety colour fields, textured pigment stippling, matte lithographic paper, and crisp typeset border all align with authentic early 20th-century devotional printmaking. Surviving examples in such vivid colour and clean condition are increasingly scarce, especially in Marian subjects with strong decorative appeal.
Condition Report: Very good condition. Colours remain bright and unfaded. Light toning to the outer margins and a few small handling marks consistent with age. One tear in the lower border. The plate text and imprimatur are sharp and fully legible.
Tips for Framing: Ideal for framing in a gilded or champagne-toned frame to complement the golden haloes and warm cloud tones. A cream or ivory mat enhances the serenity of the composition and draws focus to the blue drapery. For a more modern display, a slim black frame with a wide mat offers clean contrast while retaining the devotional atmosphere.
