Inside View of Magdalen Chapel – Engraving of Medieval Gothic Interior, 1790
This atmospheric antique engraving captures the interior of the Magdalen Chapel near Winchester, as viewed from the west end of the chancel. The image immerses the viewer in the solemn beauty of late medieval Gothic architecture, with its ribbed vaulting, clustered columns, and pointed arches adorned with intricate mouldings. The play of light and shadow across the stone surfaces lends the scene both drama and depth, while the artist’s attention to texture conveys the age and craftsmanship of the structure.
The Magdalen Chapel formed part of the Hospital of St Mary Magdalene, founded in 1148 to provide care for the sick and poor. By the time of this depiction in the late 18th century, the building had already endured centuries of use and adaptation. Soon after, the chapel was demolished in 1772, making such visual records invaluable to historians and collectors.
Engraved by James Basire (1730–1802), one of Britain’s most accomplished architectural engravers, after drawings by Jacob Schnebbelie (1760–1792), the work was produced for the Society of Antiquaries. Basire’s precise yet expressive linework and Schnebbelie’s sensitive draughtsmanship together preserve a faithful record of this lost monument of English medieval heritage.
Collectors of antiquarian engravings, Gothic architecture, or English ecclesiastical history will appreciate this plate both for its documentary value and its aesthetic merit.
