Victorian Beetle Prints Set of Four – Scarab & Stag Beetle Plates, 1893
This decorative set of four natural history beetle plates originates from the influential German entomological work Käferbuch – Naturgeschichte der Käfer Europas by the naturalist C. G. Calwer. The prints were published in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, edited by Professor Dr. G. Jäger and revised by Dr. G. Stierlin, and issued in Stuttgart by the publisher Julius Hoffmann. Calwer’s Käferbuch became one of the most widely used illustrated guides to European beetles during the late nineteenth century and was specifically intended “Zum Handgebrauche für Sammler,” meaning for practical use by collectors and naturalists.
The plates present an impressive visual survey of European beetles (Coleoptera), with particular emphasis on scarab beetles and related families. Each sheet displays numerous species carefully arranged in a structured composition that resembles museum specimen drawers or Victorian cabinets of curiosity. The insects are rendered with remarkable clarity and rich color using chromolithography, a sophisticated printing process that allowed printers to reproduce the metallic greens, bronzes, reds, and blacks characteristic of many beetle species.
Several notable beetles appear across these plates, including dung beetles such as Geotrupes stercorarius, Onthophagus taurus, and Copris lunaris, along with various scarab beetles belonging to the genera Aphodius, Rhyssemus, and Psammodius. One of the most striking figures is the famous Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus), one of Europe’s largest and most recognizable beetles, shown with its dramatic antler-like mandibles. Additional species illustrated include members of the Dorcas, Sinodendron, and Aesalus groups, offering a fascinating overview of the diversity of European scarab and stag beetles.
Beyond their scientific value, these plates possess strong decorative appeal. The symmetrical arrangements, vivid coloration, and extraordinary variety of forms create visually compelling compositions that combine nineteenth-century scientific illustration with elegant design. Condition report:
Very good antique condition with light age toning and occasional minor spotting typical of late nineteenth-century paper. Margins remain generous and colors are strong and vibrant. Minor handling marks may be present as expected for plates originally bound in a reference volume.
Framing tips:
These plates display beautifully when framed as a coordinated set. Dark walnut, black, or ebonized frames paired with ivory or warm off-white mats enhance the antique paper tones and highlight the vivid beetle colors.
