Set of Two Original Antique Engravings of Peru by C.T. Middleton, 1778
A decorative matching set of two original antique copperplate engravings illustrating traditional transportation in eighteenth-century Peru. The plates were published in London in 1778 for Charles Theodore Middleton’s A New and Complete System of Geography.
The first engraving is titled “Tarabites or Peruvian Rope Bridges.” It depicts several traditional rope crossings spanning a rocky Peruvian river valley. Figures, animals and goods are shown being transported across the water using suspended ropes and bridges, illustrating methods of travel used in the difficult terrain of the Andes.
The second engraving is titled “Various Boats, Barks &c. used in the Rivers and on the Coasts of Peru in South America.” It presents a variety of vessels, including a large sailing raft, smaller reed or wooden boats and figures navigating the waters near a rocky coastline.
Both engravings are surrounded by elaborate matching decorative borders featuring classical urns, floral garlands, ribbons and botanical ornaments. Their corresponding design, related Peruvian subjects and identical publication history make them particularly suitable for display as a pair.
Charles Theodore Middleton’s A New and Complete System of Geography was published in London for J. Cooke and contained descriptions of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, illustrated with numerous copperplate engravings. The maritime plate is recorded as having appeared in the second volume of the work published in 1778. ([Internet Archive][1])
