About this sheet
Two views of an English expedition's winter in northern Canada on a single sheet, an original copper engraving of about 1780. The upper image is lettered "Quartier d'Hyver dans la Riviere de Hayes" and the lower "Maison de Montagu", and the plate is numbered in the margins in the manner of a multi-volume travel collection, in the style associated with Prevost's Histoire generale des voyages.
The upper scene shows two sailing ships moored among ice floes and rocky shore under fir trees. They are the Dobbs Galley, commanded by William Moor, and the California, under Francis Smith, wintering in the Hayes River on the west coast of Hudson Bay. The lower scene shows Montagu House, a log building with a snow-laden roof in a clearing among spruce, with two figures standing before it and tents and smoke visible in the distance.
The pair of ships went in search of a Northwest Passage in 1746 and 1747, and this was the winter anchorage of their voyage. The sheet is a useful illustration of early English exploration of Hudson Bay.
