About this sheet
Lima, the capital of Peru, in a tinted lithograph titled "Lima. (Hauptstadt in Peru)", from the German series Malerisches Universum oder Reisen um die Welt. The sheet was lithographed by Schwabe and printed by H. Osti, and the lettering at the foot refers to the work's Berlin publishers.
The view looks over a river toward the city's skyline of church domes and bell towers on the left, with a long arched stone bridge across the water and a wall of ruined or half-built structures on the right bank. A man sits fishing at the lower right, and rocks and low pools break the foreground of the river. The lithographer has used a warm buff tone block to give the sky and water a gentle glow, with the lines drawn over it in gray.
Malerisches Universum was a German illustrated survey of the world's sights, issued in installments with descriptions, and is typical of the mid-nineteenth century taste for lithographed views of far-off cities.
