Original 19th Century Pencil Drawing of Moyobamba, Peru
An original nineteenth-century pencil drawing depicting a panoramic view of Moyobamba, one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the Peruvian Amazon. Executed with remarkable delicacy, the drawing captures the tranquil landscape surrounding the town, with rolling hills, distant mountains, native vegetation and two local figures walking along a country path in the foreground.
The inscription beneath the image identifies the location as "Moyobamba." Situated in present-day northern Peru, Moyobamba was an important colonial settlement and gateway to the Amazon basin. During the nineteenth century it was frequently visited by explorers, naturalists and travellers documenting the geography, flora, fauna and peoples of the interior of South America.
The artist has rendered the landscape with fine pencil shading and subtle tonal transitions, creating an atmospheric composition that combines topographical accuracy with artistic sensitivity. The drawing possesses the quiet elegance characteristic of nineteenth-century expedition sketches, intended to record places before the widespread use of photography.
