Antique Naval Portrait – Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen, Dutch Sea Captain, c.1785
This finely detailed late 18th-century engraving depicts Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735–1819), one of the most celebrated Dutch naval heroes of his time. The title beneath the portrait reads “De Ridder van Kinsbergen, Kapitein ter Zee” (The Knight van Kinsbergen, Captain at Sea), and the print was published in Amsterdam by Johannes Allart. The image shows the captain in full naval uniform, posed confidently with a tricorn hat in one hand and a telescope tucked under his arm, with a fleet of ships faintly visible in the background.
Van Kinsbergen earned his reputation as a brilliant naval commander through several key victories during the late 18th century. He fought in the Dutch and Russian fleets and was instrumental in battles against Barbary corsairs. For his services, he was knighted and later promoted to admiral. In addition to his naval achievements, Kinsbergen was a patron of science and education, a philanthropist, and a respected public figure in the Dutch Republic.
This portrait likely dates to the 1780s or early 1790s, a time when his fame and popularity were at their peak. The engraving was executed after a painting by A. P. Lemoine and engraved by Reinier Vinkeles, one of the most skilled Dutch engravers of the era. The composition emphasizes clarity and elegance, typical of Enlightenment-era portraiture, with crisp linework, careful modeling of the figure, and maritime references that reinforce the sitter’s naval identity.
