Soengei Belawan River, Medan Region — C.J. Kleingrothe, ca. 1910
Photogravure view of the Soengei Belawan, a river flowing through the dense tropical rainforest of East Sumatra. Created by Charles J. Kleingrothe, the leading photographer and publisher of Medan in the early 20th century, the image captures a pristine natural landscape of smooth river rocks, lush vegetation, and towering trees. The composition emphasizes the dramatic contrast between the calm reflective water and the richness of the surrounding jungle, before major agricultural expansion transformed the region.
Kleingrothe’s studio was highly influential in documenting both the urban and natural environments of the Deli region during a period of rapid economic growth fueled by tobacco, rubber, and palm-oil plantations. While many of his works depict plantation infrastructure and commercial centers, this plate is notable for focusing on the pure, undeveloped river environment — an image of Sumatra’s original ecology before the full scale of industrialization. Such landscape views are among the most visually appealing works from this portfolio, sought after by collectors who appreciate historic photography of Southeast Asian rainforest interiors.
This example retains its original printed card mount with studio and printer credits below the image. It shows excellent tonal preservation, with deep shadows and detailed textures throughout the vegetation and water. Plates from 'Sumatra’s O.K.' survive far less frequently in clean condition, especially landscape subjects, making this a desirable artwork for collectors of Indonesian history, Asian environmental imagery, and photogravure printing.
Condition report: Very good. Light foxing and mild age toning confined to the card mount margins. The photogravure image area is clean with strong detail and no tears, creases, or losses. Verso clean.
Framing tips: A natural wood frame such as teak or dark walnut enhances the organic character of the landscape. A warm off-white mat helps draw the eye into the darker tonal center of the image. UV-protected glazing recommended.
