About this sheet
North America in the later nineteenth century, titled "Nord-America", a lithographed map with outline color from H. Kiepert's Kleiner Atlas der Neueren Geographie für Schule und Haus, printed in Berlin by Dietrich Reimer around 1870. Heinrich Kiepert (1818 to 1899) was one of the leading German geographers of his day.
The map is drawn on a curved projection and covers the whole continent, from the Arctic islands and Greenland down through Mexico and Central America to the Caribbean. A color key in the lower left separates the "Vereinigte Staaten" (United States), the "Mexicanische Republik" and the "Centralamericanischen Staaten", with a scale line beneath. A numbered list at the right gives the names of the United States, keyed to numerals on the map, and the oceans are lettered in German, "Grosser oder Stiller Ocean" and "Atlantischer Ocean". Rivers, lakes and mountain systems are shown with fine shading, and the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico are clearly drawn.
As a school atlas sheet it shows the United States in its continental extent, with territories in the West still left largely open.
