About this sheet
Original antique map of Europe, a steel engraving colored by hand in outline, with a pale blue wash along the coasts, lettered "EUROPE," in the title at the lower right. The map runs from Iceland and the British Isles in the west to the Ural Mountains and the Caspian in the east, and from the North Cape south to the Mediterranean coast of Africa and Asia Minor. In the northeast the Arctic coast from Kolgouev Island to the "Obskaia G." breaks through the top border.
Beneath the title is the lettering "Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." with three scale bars: "English Miles 69.1 = 1°", "French Leagues 25 = 1°" and "German Miles 15 = 1°". The lower border is lettered "Meridian of Greenwich". The imprint below the border reads "London. Edward Stanford 6 Charing Cross." and the plate number "3." is engraved at the upper right, outside the border.
The map comes from The Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography, published in London in 1858 by Edward Stanford of 6 Charing Cross and sold at Harrow by Crossley and Clarke, booksellers to Harrow School. Its maps were selected from those of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK), founded in London in 1826, which issued its map series in parts from 1829 and was wound up in 1848; Stanford later issued the maps under his own imprint. The sheet shows Italy as separate states, with Piedmont, Tuscany and the State of the Church named individually, and Germany as a group of states including Hanover, Saxony, Bavaria and Wurtemberg beside Prussia and the Austrian Empire. Poland lies within the Russian borders, and Wallachia and Servia are named on either side of the Danube.
The landscape format and broad sweep of the continent suit a study or library wall.
Condition: Complete sheet with a small irregularity of a few millimeters to the bottom edge, at the center fold. A center fold, as issued. Light, uneven toning, slightly darker toward the edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin.
