Original antique engraved map of Athens, Piraeus and their surrounding countryside, titled “Plan des Environs d’Athènes,” engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas accompanying Jean-Jacques Barthélemy’s Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce.
This detailed historical map depicts ancient Athens and its relationship with the port of Piraeus. The fortified Long Walls connecting Athens with Piraeus and Phalerum are prominently represented, illustrating the strategically important link between the city and its maritime harbours.
Numerous sites of classical Athens are identified, including the Acropolis or Citadel, the Academy, the Lyceum, Ceramicus, Cynosarges and the surrounding roads and settlements. At the coast, the map gives a particularly detailed representation of Piraeus, its fortified harbours and the Bay of Phalerum.
The surrounding Attic landscape is finely engraved with hills, rivers, roads, vegetation, temples and ancient monuments. The combination of topographical detail and classical references makes this an especially attractive map for collectors interested in Athens, Greek archaeology and ancient history.
