Petroleum Tin Factory & Filling Operations — Kleingrothe Photogravure, Sumatra c.1900
This original photogravure by Carl Josef Kleingrothe presents a rare and highly atmospheric view into the early industrial petroleum operations in East Sumatra around 1900. The composition is divided into two images: above, a bustling interior of a tin fabrication workshop where workers — primarily local Indonesian laborers — operate heavy stamping machinery to produce containers for petroleum export. Below, a wide view across a filling section where refinery workers prepare and organize rows of square tin cans destined for shipment throughout the Dutch East Indies and beyond.
Kleingrothe was the most prominent photographer working in colonial-era Sumatra, celebrated for documenting the rapid economic expansion driven by oil, tobacco, rubber, and coffee. Commissioned by powerful plantation and industrial companies, his work illustrates a pivotal moment in Southeast Asian history, when global demand for petroleum transformed Medan and its surrounding districts into one of the world’s fastest-growing commercial hubs.
This particular print emphasizes both the technological progress of the period and the human labor behind it, offering an important record of early industrial manufacturing in Indonesia.
