Aboeng Jungle, Sumatra — Antique Photogravure by C.J. Kleingrothe c.1900
This original photogravure by renowned photographer C.J. Kleingrothe captures the wild, dense jungle landscape of Aboeng on the island of Sumatra around 1900. Kleingrothe became one of the most prominent photographers of the Dutch East Indies, especially recognized for documenting plantation culture, landscapes, and local people throughout North Sumatra.
This dramatic composition depicts the thick, untouched tropical rainforest—fallen palms, dense foliage, towering trunks, and a narrow water path cutting through the wilderness. The image reflects both the beauty and the challenges of Sumatra’s interior during the colonial expansion of the plantation economy. Kleingrothe’s work has significant documentary value, preserving a visual record of natural environments that have since greatly changed.
