Picturesque Swiss Alpine Cottage Landscape Lithograph, Hullmandel c.1830
This charming early nineteenth-century lithograph depicts a picturesque alpine dwelling titled “A Swiss Cottage,” designed by the British artist Richenda Cunningham (1782–1855) and printed by the celebrated London lithographer Charles Joseph Hullmandel. Created around 1825–1830, the print reflects the Romantic fascination with alpine scenery and rustic architecture that captivated travelers and artists during the early nineteenth century.
The composition presents a large timber Swiss cottage nestled into a hillside landscape surrounded by tall fir trees and dense vegetation. The building’s steep roof, decorative wooden balconies, and cross-topped ridge evoke the distinctive architecture associated with mountain regions of Switzerland. The structure is rendered with careful attention to detail, highlighting carved woodwork and layered construction typical of traditional alpine houses.
In the foreground several small figures animate the scene. Two villagers stand on a path while others sit on steps leading up toward the house, suggesting everyday rural life unfolding in a peaceful mountain environment. Their presence adds scale and reinforces the Romantic ideal of simple village life harmoniously integrated with nature.
The setting is carefully arranged to create a picturesque composition. Tall conifer trees frame the cottage while the landscape gently descends toward the foreground. The artist balances architectural detail with atmospheric landscape elements, allowing the cottage to emerge as the focal point within the broader natural environment.
The work was printed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789–1850), one of the most influential lithographers in Britain. Hullmandel was instrumental in developing and refining lithographic printing in London, introducing technical innovations that allowed artists to achieve delicate tonal gradations and subtle atmospheric effects. These qualities are visible in the softly modeled clouds, foliage, and architectural shading within the print.
Richenda Cunningham, born Richenda Gurney, was an accomplished landscape artist who studied under the Norwich School painter John Crome. Her work reflects the broader Picturesque movement that flourished in Britain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Artists and travelers sought out dramatic landscapes, rustic buildings, and scenic viewpoints across Europe, particularly in Switzerland and the Alpine regions.
This lithograph likely formed part of Cunningham’s portfolio Nine Views Taken on the Continent, produced after her travels through Europe. Such prints were intended for collectors and travelers fascinated by continental scenery and the romantic character of alpine life.
Today the print remains an appealing example of early British lithography and of the Picturesque tradition in landscape art, combining architectural interest with a serene mountain setting.
