Condition

Good condition for its age, with overall light toning and some scattered spotting in the margins. Minor surface marks and faint discoloration visible in places. Plate mark visible. Strong impression with crisp engraving detail.

About this sheet

The Source of the Passaic Falls in New Jersey, an original steel engraving of about 1830, lettered "Source of the Passaic Falls" in the decorative border below the view.

Two steep, layered rock faces rise at the left and right of the scene and enclose a quiet gorge. Pine trees and deciduous trees stand in the hollow beyond, with a few small figures walking on the flat stone of the foreground and a couple standing on the far side near the water. Rocks, ferns and low foliage fill the lower foreground.

The view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage. The lower corners carry two small vignettes of American Revolutionary subjects: at the left a military encounter lettered "Battle near Princeton 1777", and at the right a winter encampment. A small ornament shows a cliff and tree at the top. The falls are in Paterson, and the subject of the border reflects the period's interest in the history of the young republic.
