About this sheet

A distant view of the Falls of Niagara, an original steel engraving of about 1831 by Fenner, Sears and Company after a composition by the American painter Thomas Cole. The plate title, "A Distant View of the Falls of Niagara", is lettered in the decorative border below the image.

Dark storm clouds hang over the scene, with a shaft of light breaking through at the upper right. The river runs in the middle ground toward the falls, which appear as a pale band of white water in the distance. Forest covers both banks. In the foreground a few figures gather on a rocky ledge at the left, overlooking the water.

The central view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage. Two small vignettes in the lower corners show episodes from the American Revolution: at the left a scene captioned "Major André seized" and at the right a scene captioned "and executed as a spy". At the top a small ornament shows a snake among leaves.
