Decorative set of three original antique hand-colored engravings depicting regional costumes from Germany and Hungary. Published in Paris by Aubert circa 1850 as part of the series “Les peuples peints par leurs Costumes.”
The set comprises:
1. Jeune Fille Bourgeoise de Munich – A young bourgeois woman from Munich, elegantly dressed in characteristic mid-19th-century regional costume.
2. Bourgeois, Maître Tanneur de J’Azberény (District des Jazygues, Basse Hongrie) – A master tanner from Jászberény in the Jászság district of Lower Hungary, portrayed in distinctive dark costume with decorative braiding and fur hat.
3. Paysanne de la Forêt Noire – A peasant woman from Germany’s Black Forest, wearing traditional regional dress and a distinctive broad-brimmed decorated hat.
Finely engraved and enhanced with attractive period hand coloring, the three works provide a fascinating visual record of European regional dress and social identity during the mid-19th century.
The soft pink and blue of the Munich woman, the striking dark costume of the Hungarian figure and the red, black and white Black Forest dress create a particularly attractive and balanced group. Their matching format, typography and coloring make the prints especially suitable for displaying together as a horizontal triptych or gallery wall arrangement.
