Decorative set of four original antique hand-colored engravings depicting regional costumes, occupations and social figures from Germany, including Bavaria, Württemberg and Baden. Published in Paris circa 1850 as part of the series “Les peuples peints par leurs Costumes.”
The set comprises:
1. Marchand de Grains de Ravensbourg (Royaume de Wurtemberg) – A grain merchant from Ravensburg in the Kingdom of Württemberg, depicted in distinctive regional dress with bright yellow breeches and blue stockings.
2. Chasseur de Kochel – A hunter from Kochel in Bavaria, shown in traditional hunting costume with feathered hat, walking staff and sporting gun.
3. Paysanne d’Hornberg (Duché de Bade) – A peasant woman from Hornberg in the Duchy of Baden, wearing an exceptionally colorful regional costume and shown beside a fountain with a large green vessel.
4. Étudiant, Président d’une Corporation, Costume des jours de Fête – A German student and president of a student corporation, portrayed in ceremonial dress worn on festive occasions.
Finely engraved and enhanced with attractive period hand coloring, the four prints provide a fascinating visual record of German regional identity, occupations and dress during the mid-19th century.
The set is particularly decorative due to the variety of subjects and colors, ranging from the traditional Bavarian hunter and colorful Hornberg woman to the Ravensburg merchant and formally dressed student. Their matching format and typography make the four works especially suitable for display together in a symmetrical 2 x 2 arrangement.
