Decorative set of four original antique hand-colored engravings depicting traditional costumes and regional figures from Castile and Madrid, Spain. Published in Paris by Aubert circa 1850 as part of the series Les peuples peints par leurs Costumes.
The set comprises:
1. Femme des Environs de Valladolid (Vieille Castille) – Woman from the surroundings of Valladolid, Old Castile.
2. Paysan Galicien (Porteur d’eau à Madrid) – Galician peasant working as a water carrier in Madrid.
3. Alguasil de la Place des Taureaux – An alguacil associated with the Spanish bullring, depicted in distinctive formal costume.
4. À Segovie (Vieille Castille) – Traditional male figure from Segovia, Old Castile.
The figures are finely engraved and enhanced with attractive period hand coloring. Together, the four prints provide a fascinating visual record of Spanish regional dress, occupations and customs during the mid-19th century.
Their matching format and complementary colors make them particularly attractive displayed together as a group, especially in a symmetrical 2 x 2 arrangement.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with visible age-related foxing, spotting and toning, varying between the sheets. Some minor marginal wear and traces of former binding. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
