Inhabitants of French Harbour – Antique Hand-Colored Ethnographic Print c.1805
This expressive and beautifully hand-colored ethnographic print titled “Bewooners van de Haven der Franschen” (“Inhabitants of French Harbour”) depicts Indigenous people living at a settlement historically known as French Harbour in the southernmost region of South America. It was published in Amsterdam around 1805 as part of the Dutch anthropological series “De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol” (“Humankind as Found on the Known Globe”), written by Martinus Stuart and illustrated by Jaques Kuyper.
The scene shows a family inside a rustic shelter constructed of timber and animal skins. The figures wear garments made of hides and fur, adorned with beads and feathers for ornamentation. The child sleeps comfortably in a nest of fabrics while the adults appear engaged in conversation or daily preparation activities. Various personal belongings, including boxes, tools, and adornments, are carefully depicted. The original hand-coloring remains rich and engaging, enhancing textures and facial expressions.
Stuart & Kuyper’s publication stands as an early Dutch attempt to depict global Indigenous cultures through travel accounts and exploration reports. While reflecting European views of the time, these prints now provide valuable historical insight into lifeways before major colonial changes across the region.
