Dakota (Sioux) People – Antique Hand-Colored Ethnographic Print c.1805
This finely hand-colored ethnographic print titled “Naudowessies” depicts Indigenous Dakota (Sioux) people of North America. It was published in Amsterdam around 1805 as part of the influential Dutch anthropological series “De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol” (“Humankind as Found on the Known Globe”), written by Martinus Stuart and illustrated by Jaques Kuyper.
The scene presents two Dakota figures adorned with traditional regalia, including feathered headdresses, jewelry, and decorated garments. One figure holds a ceremonial staff or pipe with vivid tassels, while the other gestures expressively, suggesting an exchange or ritual interaction. The background of lush foliage and wooded terrain evokes the Indigenous homelands of the Great Plains and Upper Mississippi River regions. The original hand-coloring remains vibrant, emphasizing skin tones, ornaments, and natural surroundings.
Stuart & Kuyper’s publication is one of the earliest Dutch attempts to visually document world cultures based on travel and exploration narratives. While reflecting the perspectives of its era, the series now stands as a valuable historical record of Indigenous lifeways prior to widespread changes caused by American expansion.
