Pair Antique Botanical Lithographs, Sorbus Toringo & Phlox, 1850s
An elegant and decorative pair of mid-19th century botanical chromolithographs depicting Sorbus toringo (Japanese rowan) and Phlox, presented here as a harmonious set. These plates originate from the Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, issued in the 1850s under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese.
The first print shows a finely rendered branch of Sorbus toringo, bearing clusters of delicate blossoms and small yellow fruits, accompanied by detailed botanical studies of its floral elements. The composition balances scientific precision with a graceful natural arrangement. The second print features a soft and refined depiction of Phlox, with pale lilac blossoms arranged in an airy composition, emphasizing the plant’s ornamental qualities.
Both prints are executed in chromolithography, a technique that allowed for subtle color gradations and fine detail, making them highly desirable examples of 19th-century botanical illustration. Printed by Lemercier in Paris and after designs by Q.M.R. Ver Huell and others, these works reflect the high standards of European botanical publishing during the period.

Condition report:
Both prints are in fair to good condition with light age toning and scattered spotting. Some minor foxing visible, more pronounced in the margins. Original fold lines visible, as issued. Margins intact and images remain clear with well-preserved color.
Framing tips:
Best presented as a pair in matching frames, such as dark walnut or ebonized wood, combined with wide ivory mats to create a cohesive and elegant presentation. For a lighter, more contemporary look, slim black frames with clean white mats provide a refined gallery aesthetic.
