Pair Antique Botanical Lithographs, Lilium Partheneion & Coridion, 1856
A vibrant and highly decorative pair of mid-19th century botanical chromolithographs depicting two striking lily species: Lilium partheneion and Lilium coridion. These finely executed plates originate from the Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, issued in the 1850s under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese.
The first print presents Lilium partheneion, with elegantly arching stems and vivid orange blossoms accented by warm yellow highlights and fine spotting. The second plate depicts Lilium coridion, distinguished by its luminous yellow petals delicately marked with red speckles. Both compositions are rendered with remarkable clarity, capturing the slender foliage and graceful structure characteristic of lilies, while maintaining a strong decorative presence.
Executed in chromolithography and printed by Lemercier in Paris after designs by Siebold & de Vriese and collaborators such as Ver Huell, these works exemplify the refined craftsmanship of 19th-century European botanical illustration. The rich yet balanced color palette and the clean, uncluttered compositions make this pair especially appealing as a cohesive set.

Condition report:
Both prints are in good condition with light age toning and occasional minor spotting. Some faint foxing visible, mainly in the margins. Edges show minor wear consistent with age. Images remain crisp with strong, well-preserved colors.
Framing tips:
Best presented as a pair in matching frames, such as dark walnut or ebonized wood, combined with wide ivory mats to enhance contrast and create a unified look. For a more contemporary aesthetic, slim black frames with clean white mats provide a refined gallery-style presentation.
