Antique Botanical Lithograph, Vanilla Guianensis, Suriname Orchid 1856
A rare and elegant mid-19th century botanical chromolithograph depicting Vanilla guianensis, the vanilla orchid native to Suriname. This refined plate originates from the Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, published in 1856 under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese.
The composition presents the climbing orchid with graceful, curving stems and broad, fleshy leaves rendered in deep green tones. Two delicate white blossoms emerge from the vine, their soft, translucent petals carefully shaded to convey both texture and fragility. Above, a cluster of unopened buds suggests the plant’s ongoing growth cycle. The overall composition is both scientifically accurate and aesthetically balanced, capturing the exotic nature of this economically and botanically significant species.
Vanilla orchids were of great importance in the 19th century due to their connection to the production of vanilla, a highly prized commodity. This illustration reflects the Dutch interest in documenting and cultivating valuable plant species from their overseas territories, particularly in Suriname.
