Lioness and Cub, Brodtmann Hand-Colored Natural History Lithograph, 1816
This striking original hand-colored lithograph depicts a lioness accompanied by her cub, rendered with the elegance and scientific precision characteristic of early nineteenth-century natural history illustration. The plate is titled Die Löwin ("The Lioness") and bears the scientific designation Felis Leo Foemina, reflecting the zoological classification used during the period.
Created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862), the print was published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche. This ambitious work sought to introduce the animal kingdom to a broad audience through finely executed lithographs combining scientific observation with artistic refinement.

Condition report:
Good condition considering age. Light age toning, occasional foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with a print over 200 years old. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Please examine photographs carefully.
