This finely matched pair of antique natural history engravings depicts Hemipteres—true bugs including shield bugs and aquatic species—illustrated with clarity, balance, and decorative restraint. Issued circa 1800 for the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, the two plates are Hémiptères, Plate 4, engraved after drawings by Jean Baptiste Blanchard, one of the most accomplished French scientific illustrators of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The left plate presents a structured overview of multiple Hemipteran species, each carefully arranged and accompanied by detailed anatomical studies of legs, mouthparts, and segments. The restrained palette of greens, reds, and warm browns is applied with original hand coloring, allowing the insects to stand out crisply against the generous cream-colored paper.

Condition report:
Two original antique copper engravings with original hand coloring. Light, even age toning throughout, with minor spotting and gentle handling marks consistent with age. Margins intact with no major losses. Overall a well-matched and attractive pair.

Frame both prints identically in dark walnut, ebonized wood, or smoked oak with a slim to medium-width profile. Use wide warm-ivory mats to emphasize the engraving detail; an optional muted olive inner slip complements the insect coloration. Museum or UV-filtering glass is recommended. Hang side by side with a modest gap and align at the top for a clean, architectural presentation.
