This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Joost van den Vondel, the most famous poet and playwright of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1587, Vondel is often called the Dutch Shakespeare, renowned for his tragedies, religious epics, and lyrical poetry. Though he became a literary giant, he also worked as a bookseller and lived a modest life in Amsterdam. His influence on Dutch literature and language remains foundational.

In this warm and intimate scene, Vondel is seated at a small desk, writing with an open book in hand. Shelves packed with parcels and papers surround him, and a customer stands at the counter of his modest shop, engaging in conversation. The image evokes both the intellectual and working life of this literary figure. His face is animated and thoughtful, a man immersed in his world of words and ideas.

This lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850. It is executed in the lithographic technique and softly hand-colored, creating an inviting and historically rich portrait.
