Antique Calligraphy Engraving – George Bickham, Universal Penman Plate 89, 1733
This elegant 18th-century engraved calligraphy sheet comes from the celebrated English writing manual The Universal Penman, the masterpiece of the engraver and writing master George Bickham the Elder (1684–1758). The plate is titled “LETTERS” and is numbered 89 in the upper right corner, corresponding to No. XXXII within the original sequence of engraved writing examples.
The Universal Penman, published in London between 1733 and 1741, is one of the most important works in the history of Western calligraphy. Issued initially in separate numbers and later compiled into volumes, the book was designed as a comprehensive model for elegant handwriting. Bickham engraved the work after designs by the finest English writing masters of the period, transforming pen-written specimens into highly refined copperplate engravings. The publication became enormously influential and helped standardize the English Round Hand, the elegant script that later evolved into the foundation of modern cursive handwriting used in commerce and education.
This plate beautifully demonstrates the artistic possibilities of letterforms. The upper portion contains an elaborate cartouche formed from scrolling ornamental letters framing a vignette of classical putti engaged in artistic activities, symbolizing learning, creativity, and the transmission of knowledge. Beneath this decorative header appears the central title “LETTERS”, followed by several examples of formal calligraphic writing praising the power and permanence of written language.
The text celebrates the cultural importance of writing and memory:
“By the Assistance of Letters the Memory of past Things is preserved, and the Foreknowledge of some Things to come is Revealed…”
A decorative calligraphic panel below includes the inscription:
“Inscription is the Language of a Tomb; Art can by Letters speak when Nature’s dumb.”
At the bottom of the sheet the plate is signed “Geo. Bickham Fecit”, indicating that the engraving was executed by Bickham himself. A playful ornamental fish motif completes the composition, demonstrating the ornamental creativity typical of writing manuals of the period.
Sheets from The Universal Penman are highly collectible today both as decorative works of art and as historically important documents in the development of European handwriting and typography. Their intricate flourishes and balanced compositions make them particularly attractive for framing and display.
Condition: Fair antique condition with age-related toning and scattered light foxing, typical for 18th-century paper. Minor creases and small edge imperfections may be present in the margins. The engraved image remains clear with strong impression.
Framing tips: This print frames beautifully in a dark walnut or gilded frame with a wide ivory or museum-white mat. The refined calligraphic ornament and balanced layout make it especially suitable for display in libraries, studies, offices, or interiors inspired by classical typography and design.
