Anna and Maria Tesselschade Visscher – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph presents a refined interior scene featuring Anna and Maria Tesselschade Visscher, two accomplished sisters from the Dutch Golden Age renowned for their contributions to literature, the arts, and intellectual life. Daughters of the poet and merchant Roemer Visscher, they were central figures in the Muiderkring, a circle of artists, poets, and scholars that included Hooft, Vondel, and Huygens.
Maria Tesselschade Visscher (1594–1649), seated in the foreground, was admired not only for her poetry but also for her skill in engraving, glass cutting, and singing. Her older sister Anna Visscher (1583–1651), standing beside her, was a poet and translator who earned praise from many contemporaries for her intellect and talent.
The print shows them engaging in cultured activities, with Maria holding a decorative glass object and Anna reading aloud from a book, suggesting the harmony of art, poetry, and domestic refinement. The room is modest but elegant, with a curtained bed and cabinet, emphasizing the private, intellectual world these women inhabited.
Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850, the lithograph is carefully composed and softly hand-colored, capturing the grace and intellect of these two sisters.
